An all India level competitive examination, called Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services. The examination constitutes a written examination (five tests) and followed by an Interview. ESE is considered as one of the toughest examination in India due to the difficulty related to the examination and the selection procedure.
Indian Engineering Services remain the most sought-after careers for the engineering graduates in India. The candidates who get selected for IES, enjoy a very high respect and stature in the society and are appointed as Assistant Executive Engineers in various departments under central government for Group A and Group B posts. The various services in which recruitment is made through ESE include Indian Railways, Central Engineering, Central Water engineering, Border roads Engineering, Indian Defence service of Engineers among many other such departments of the central government.
ESE is conducted in the four streams of engineering – Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics. Aspirants aged between 21 to 30 years are eligible to apply (relaxation is applicable for SC/ST/PWD candidates ), and all Engineers along with certain specifically mentioned MSc streams can apply to be an IES through the ESE.
